A Review of the Galen Leather x Nock Co. Sinclair Pen Case
A hands-on review of the Galen Leather x Nock Co. Sinclair pen case in Deep Cognac — soft vegetable-tanned leather, a Turkish lining with centuries of history, and room for everything.
It is rare these days for a leather good to catch my interest, but when Galen Leather announced a new line of items a few months back, there was one item in particular that caught my eye. The Sinclair pen case, created in collaboration with fellow purveyor of pen and stationery accessories Nock co. and inspired by their own Sinclair design, has an exterior crafted from soft vegetable-tanned cow leather and a lining of Kutnu, which I’ve learned is a handwoven Turkish fabric whose production methods have remained largely unchanged for almost 600 years. I was too late in attempting to purchase the case when it first came out, but was able to successfully place an order in the Deep Cognac color, a favorite of mine for leather goods. Despite coming all the way from Turkey, it arrived earlier this week, just a few days after I placed my order.
The softness of the leather jumped out to me immediately upon removing the case from its thoughtfully prepared packaging. When comparing the texture to another Galen Leather product I own, the three pen leather flap case, the softness is notable, and something I found myself enjoying immediately.
The interior of the case includes a tag paying homage to Nock Co.’s design, and the handwoven fabric feels durable to the touch, as well as when sliding items in and out. There are three pen slots on one side, with generous pocket space to comfortably fit larger pens like a Conid Bulkfiller or Pilot Custom 823. On the opposite side is a single pocket that can hold passport-size or pocket notebooks, or in my case I chose to clip a rollerball pen on the opposite side during my first few days of use. Another nice feature is the flexibility of the case’s middle compartment. The space in the middle can be used however you choose, and I rather enjoyed slipping a pair of headphones there for safe keeping.
It’s also worth mentioning that the quality of the zipper mechanism feels absolutely top notch, with a smooth opening and closing feeling that adds to the overall experience of using this case.
Empty, the case feels lighter than I expected it to feel, and of course its weight when in use is variable depending upon what you choose to put inside it.
Perhaps an important question to answer is “who is this for?” To me, this case represents a nice balance between a larger all-in-one case that can also house a notebook, and the aforementioned three pen leather flap case which offers space for nothing else while providing a slimmer profile.
Overall, I’m quite pleased with my purchase of the Galen Leather rendition of the Sinclair pen case, and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who appreciates high quality materials, and high craftsmanship that will outlive you if cared for.
