About Commonplace

What to say about this little space on the internet that I've created? First of all, Commonplace is meant to be a space that feels different than what the internet has become. There is no short form content here, no news, and no advertising. I've spent much of my life attempting to reconcile a sense that a simpler life suited me, while working toward what outwardly looks like a conventional 21st century existence in suburban New England. As is inevitably the case in such instances, my life has its share of contradictions but along the way I have found ways to connect to this simplicity in a few ways:

  • reading deeply
  • personal reflection and writing
  • an affection for quality writing tools and leather goods
  • spending time in nature
  • the occasional tranquility of a tobacco pipe.

In 2026 it would seem odd that all of these interests should coincide in one single blog; a more savvy blogger might separate them out in order to appeal to specific groups and to risk alienating readers by casting too wide a net. But my intention is to use Commonplace as a space to integrate these parts of myself together; to share and keep a record of my experiences and reflections in the activities within my life that have always helped me keep my feet on the ground so-to-speak. In these early stages I can't say exactly what this space will become, but I do hope you find something useful for yourself and enjoy your time here.
